Divers have again suspended their search for a Long Island man who apparently drowned while swimming off the central New Jersey coast this weekend.

Deal police say 30-year-old Joshua Nevarez of Amityville and a female acquaintance were swimming together when he somehow became distressed and disappeared around 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Authorities say swimming is illegal in the area where he went missing.

Other swimmers were able to help the woman make it safely back to shore, but could not help Nevarez. Officials say there were no life guards on duty at the time.

Coast Guard crews and area dive teams then looked for Nevarez for several hours, but the search was later suspended due to darkness. It was resumed shortly after dawn Sunday, but then suspended in the afternoon due to rough sea conditions.
