Police say Kenneth D. Edward of Brooklyn was in court Monday to face charges of leaving the scene of an accident when he attempted to flee First District Court in Hempstead.
As an officer tried to block his escape, police say Edward struck him in the face and pushed him into a glass wall.
The 20-year-old defendant was apprehended by other officers and charged with assault and resisting arrest.
The officer was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
