Like it or not, homework does have a purpose and that is to help students excel.
That's why last year Erika Rivera brought her son to the Queens Library in Long Island City for afterschool help with his homework.
"It's been good because he didn't used to do well in school. So after that everything is going fine," Rivera said.
That's encouraging news for parents and students throughout the five boroughs.
In Queens, counselors, coordinators, and tutors oversee an afterschool math, science, and literacy program called "BOOST". That stands for "Best out of School Time".
"Everyday between the hours of 3 and 6 there is someone available to assist with whatever homework you have. It is not subject specific because our staff, they're trained to work with the students for whatever need they have," said BOOST Coordinator, Leslie Taylor.
What is happening in Queens is also happening in other libraries across the city.
Free homework help is being offered for students of all ages.
It's a deal no student or parent should pass up.
"Our goal is to have them engaged everyday after school to help them with their homework as well as their overall educational development," Queens Library CEO Thomas Galante said.
Homeworknyc.org is a website developed by the city's Department of Education and the city's three library systems.
On the website you will find specific homework help resources such as online textbooks, ask-a-teacher, and access to databases.
If you don't have a computer, you can always find one at your local library.
