Scientists have had a medical breakthrough and can now pinpoint a genetic risk factor for common migraines.

Researchers studied genetic data from more than 50,000 Europeans.

They discovered that those prone to migraines share a variation in a gene.

Scientists hope the discovery will lead to new treatments for the often debilitating and excruciating headaches.

That's welcome news for the 300 million migraine sufferers world wide.

The study is published in "Nature Genetics".
