Mark Barber was arraigned on an 80-count indictment Tuesday. He had been arrested in December and charged with 58 counts of rape, sex abuse and other crimes.
His attorney did not immediately return a telephone call for comment.
Nassau County officials on Long Island say Barber used his position as a grievance officer for the county jail's female inmate population to engage in sexual relationships. They say Barber targeted inmates with histories of drug abuse, prostitution, or mental health treatment.
Seven women have come forward with abuse allegations.
Barber has been fired. He faces up to 20 years if convicted.
