A 15-year-old girl was shot and hospitalized as she tried to flee a drive-by shooting in Newark overnight.

The shooting happened on 14th Street and Avon Avenue. The victim's mother said her son and daughter were sitting on the front porch when the drive-by took place around 1 a.m. The girl was hit in the side as she tried to run inside, her mother said.

A friend of the family reportedly tried to rush the wounded girl to the hospital before his car broke down.

Police rushed to the location where the gray Honda got a flat tire, and they took the victim the rest of the way to University Hospital.

Police are now searching for the gunman.

The victim's condition is unknown, but she is expected to survive. Police have not said if the girl was targeted or if she was shot randomly.
