"He was born with Cerebral Palsy," says his mom. "He wasn't breathing for 4 minutes when he was born so the lack of oxygen to his brain caused the brain damage."
Although wheelchair bound, Tommy lives independently in a home for the developmentally challenged. His room is filled with crafts he's made and awards.
"Everybody says he's a happy kid," says Margaret.
But Tommy's smile got wiped away by this couch, a present from his mom. Margaret bought it so Tommy's large family and friends would have a place to sit during their frequent visits.
"I'm very disappointed."
Turn the couch over and you'll see the reasons. First, the front, then one of the back legs fell off.
Also, after limited use, a sizeable hole in the side of the couch. And cushions that look like they've had it. "The fabric's all stretched out."
Margaret bought the couch in January of 2009. She paid extra for a warranty, which offered to send materials to patch up the problems. But when the second leg broke off, she wanted the sofa replaced. Margaret said a store rep kept promising a swap that never happened.
Until we called the store and just a couple of days later...
"All I needed was 7 On Your Side. You did what I couldn't do."
Margaret was told to pick out a brand new sofa, and issued a full credit of $682.35.
"It would've never happened without your efforts. My son and I thank you," said the relieved mom.
Tommy will have his new couch picked out in the next two weeks. One of his sisters wants to choose it for him. The couch was inexpensive, his mother admits that. She just expected it to last more than a few months.
