Alleged fake cop pulled over real cop before arrest

LONG ISLAND

Police say Detective William Zambito was driving home from work when he was pulled over by an unmarked car with flashing lights and sirens Monday afternoon.

Police say the suspect, 35-year-old Victor Alfaro-Marquez, approached the vehicle and identified himself as a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agent. Detective Zambito identified himself as a detective and Alfaro-Marquez quickly returned to his vehicle and left the scene. The detective was suspicious of Alfaro-Marquez's behavior and conducted a follow-up investigation, which led to the arrest of Alfaro-Marquez at his home in Selden.

Alfaro-Marquez's car was impounded after his arrest. Inside the car police recovered two badges, handcuffs, a pellet pistol in a holster and a DEA baseball hat and shirt. Alfaro-Marquez was charged with Criminal Impersonation, and was released on bail.

The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone who may have encountered Alfaro-Marquez under similar circumstances to contact the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
