Saturday evening, observant Jews in the New York City area and around the world are breaking their fast at the conclusion of Yom Kippur.

Worshippers attended services at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

Yom Kippur, which is also called the Day of Atonement, is marked by reflection, repentance, and fasting.

The NYPD assigned extra security to synagogues in the city as a precaution.
