Chock full o' Nuts returns to Manhattan

NEW YORK

But before the tins were big sellers, Chock full o' Nuts was known for its luncheonettes with counters that would snake throughout each restaurant.

Their whole wheat donuts, nutted cheese sandwiches and date nut bread sandwiches - now all available at the first Chock full o' Nuts to open in nearly 30 years, located on 25 West 23rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.

Chock full o' Nuts was started by William Black in 1926 as a nut store, hence the name. But when the Great Depression hit, he added coffee and donuts.

In its heyday, there were 100 Chock full o' Nuts luncheonettes in New York City. The last one closed in the early '80s when the company turned its focus to retail.

It's now owned by an Italian company, so of course there's espresso.

While some will go back to what they remember, for others it is all new and a chance to discover if Chock full o' Nuts is that heavenly coffee as the jingle claims.
