Political attaché arrested after scuffle with cop

NEW YORK

Authorities say 38-year-old Mario de Gonzalez Bengabo-Gomo was taken into custody Thursday night following the dispute, which broke out as he and a group of diplomats were attempting to board a jet.

They were trying to pass a package containing a gun through airport security when Bengabo-Gomo grabbed the package and walked away.

A Port Authority police officer quickly caught up with him and the scuffle ensued.

The officer was injured and sent to the hospital.

Bengabo-Gomo, who does not have diplomatic status, was arrested.

He was charged with assault, resisting arrest and weapons possession.
