An 8-year-old boy is dead and five other children are hospitalized after a three-alarm fire burned through a home in Brooklyn.

It happened in Midwood, during a religious celebration.

The fire moved very quickly. A father ran in repeatedly to try and save his children. Unfortunately, he couldn't save one.

In the end, it was desolation, with smoke rising from the embers inside. It was a tragic end for a young boy who neighbors say he was trapped on the third floor. People saw firefighters trying to get him out through the home's burglar bars.

"They were trying to give him CPR, and you could see black foam in his mouth," one witness said. "And then all hell broke loose."

The boy's father carried out his other five children before firefighters arrived, but he couldn't reach the boy caught in a top floor bedroom.

A 1-year-old girl, in respiratory distress, is in critical condition. Another girl and three boys were rushed to the burn center at Staten Island University Hospital. All four are said to be in stable condition. The oldest is 10, while the youngest is just 3 years old.

The fire, at 1118 Avenue P, started at about 9:40 p.m. Wednesday on the third floor. Authorities say 20 people were home, many of them at dinner, celebrating the end of the Jewish holiday Sukkot.

By the time the fire was under control almost 90 minutes later, flames had eaten their way through the roof and four firefighters had been injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, though officials do not believe it to be suspicious.
