UConn launches week of suicide prevention programs

STORRS, Connecticut

The events include training to help students and UConn employees know when to intervene and how to refer a troubled student to support programs on campus.

The events run Monday through Saturday. They also include movies, special speakers, information tables on campus and a memorial service.

Barry Schreier, UConn's director of counseling and mental health services, says statistics show more than 1,000 college students nationwide commit suicide yearly.

He said UConn's programs are meant to show troubled students that they're not alone, and to give others the training to guide those students to help.

Another week of suicide prevention programs is planned in February 2011.
