State of the subways

BROOKLYN

First, the good news. The number 7 is number one out of the city's 21 subway lines.

Winter Williams, who rides the 7 everyday, says you didn't have to tell her.

"I think that is the best line because it's the cleanest line. It always moves the fastest. You never have to wait on the train. It's consistent. It's rarely any trash on the train. So, it's definitely clean and kept," she said.

Using official transit data, the report card looks at several measures of service including frequency and regularity of trains, mechanical failures, cleanliness, and even clarity of announcements.

That brings us to the bad news.

For the second year in a row, the "C" line is rated worst.

"When you get on the train, you're getting offered a slower ride, a dirtier ride with less clear announcements. A ride with your cars breaking down more often," Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign said.

"It's just a bit slow. It doesn't come as often, but it always does come," C line rider Amy Casillas said.

System wide, the report does outline some improvements.

Most notably, 26 percent fewer car breakdowns, 95 percent of the cars were rated clean and 91 percent of subway announcements were accurate and understandable.

This report doesn't take into account the major service cuts that went into effect back in June. The Straphangers Campaign warns the cuts could mean more crowded trains, longer waits and extra transfers for riders.
