Junkyard fire sends smoke across the area

A huge fire broke out at a scrap iron yard in Jersey City overnight, sending the smell of smoke across parts of the area.

Massive flames were seen shooting up from the scrap heap on Linden Boulevard Sunday early morning.

It took firefighters nearly 12 hours to put the fire out.

Eyewitness News received word that the smell of smoke spread throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

New York's Office of Emergency Management sent out a tweet, letting people know that there's no concern about air quality.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation
