An eight-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike killed one driver and shut down a portion of the roadway near Newark Liberty International Airport for more than six hours.

The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday just south of Interchange 13A.

Two tractor-trailers, a dump truck, a box truck, a pickup truck and three cars were involved. Authorities said the driver of the pickup truck was killed. The victim's name has not been released.

Turnpike Authority spokesman Joe Orlando said the southbound lanes of the turnpike's outer roadway were closed until 7:30 p.m. as state police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.

Orlando said the crash backed up southbound traffic for 12 miles.
