He was able to approach recruiters after the Defense Department said it will begin accepting openly gay recruits.
But it wasn't until after his speech that he learned that victory was short lived.
"Hearing this today is a major disappointment. I'm confused," Choi said.
After the West Point graduate announced he was gay, he was discharged.
A federal appeals court Wednesday allowed a temporary freeze on a judge's order telling the military to stop enforcing its ban on openly gay troops.
Government lawyers pushed to suspend the ruling while appeals are in the works, arguing that it would pose a major problem for the military.
"We need to hold President Obama accountable. He's been given this Christmas present. It's unconstitutional!" Choi said.
Gay rights group lawyers are filing arguments Monday, students say its a sign this is far from over.
"It can be disheartening, but we have to keep fighting," said senior Ali Malelo.
