The incident took place on Maple Avenue between Jefferson and Saint George streets.
People were being evacuated from the area.
The Rahway police department is on the scene.
Elizabethtown gas is also there, trying to shut the line.
Officials say a utility crew that was not part of Elizabethtown gas was working in the area and cut one of the lines.
