Six families win house lottery in Hempstead

HEMPTSTEAD, NY

They are this year's winners to buy homes in the Town of Hempstead for at least 50% off.

Tanya Jones could describe Monday's lottery as a life changing luck of the draw.

The mother of three says her children will now have the stability of a brand new place to call home.

"I was like, thank you Jesus, it means everything," Jones said.

Jones was one of six lucky applicants who won the American dream in the Town of Hempstead's affordable housing lottery.

So far, 250 homes have been constructed under the program using federal and local grant money.

It gives people the opportunity to buy a 1,500 square foot three-bedroom house for $160,000, which is less than half the market value.

Chadine Graham was especially thrilled after coming up empty in last year's December lottery.

Now she can give her 5-year-old daughter Makayla a better life.

All told, 17 families made the finals.

Winners range from single moms to first time home buyers.

The homes in Monday's lottery still have to be built.

The winners will be ready to move in by summer of 2011.
