Burglars hit another Bronx church

BRONX Our Lady of Refuge Principal Marivel Colon cleaned up the mess in her office on Monday, but she couldn't mend the hole in her heart.

"They steal from children," she said. "We've been violated."

Burglars broke into the Bedford Park school through a gymnasium window. They made their way to the office and stole a pair of laptop computers, a digital scanner, a new video camera and $1300 in cash.

The break-in at Our Lady of Refuge was the fifth church burglary in the past week, all of them in the northwest Bronx.

Burglars also hit the Kingsbridge Evangelical Lutheran Church. They used a sledgehammer first to enter St. John's Catholic Church last weekend and then St. Ann's Church and School early Friday morning.

In between, they hit Our Lady of Angels Church and School Monday night. The burglars entered through a cafeteria window, smashed through the principal's office door and again grabbed a laptop and $900 in cash.

"That was money to benefit the school and they took it. We're going to struggle to replace it," Sister Mary Cleary said.
