Woman, 85, arrested in deadly hit and run

BRONXVILLE

Bridget Gambone is facing a felony charge for allegedly leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Police say the Yonkers senior citizen actually hit 59-year old Sheryl Chasin twice Thursday afternoon before taking off.

Chasin was then hit seconds later by another driver who didn't realize someone was lying in the roadway. That motorist stopped and will not be charged.

Chasin was the executive director for human resources and personnel for the Yonkers school system.

She was struck just steps away from a restaurant where a teacher of the year was about to be honored.

Chasin is being remembered as cheerful and gregarious. The school's superintendent said "the world was rosy through Sheryl's eyes... because of her insistence that every child and staff member in Yonkers could achieve excellence."

Police acknowledge the victim was jaywalking, but residents say the accident still underscores the need for a light on the busy Kraft Avenue.

Police say they don't believe alcohol nor age played a role in the accident, but they arrested Gambone after she could not explain why she left the scene.
