Man in custody in NYC ice-pick elevator robberies

NEW YORK

A person of interest is now in custody following a string of elevator robberies targeting women in the Bronx and Manhattan.

New Jersey police picked up an ex-convict in Bergen County over the weekend. Investigators believe it may be the man who the NYPD says has struck at least six times since last month.

The most recent attacks were last Thursday in Stuyvesant Town. Police say he held up two women in the elevator, threatening them with a weapon that looked like an ice pick.

The man was arrested in Cliffside Park on Saturday, following a tip. Now, he's in the Bergen County jail. NYPD detectives have not yet questioned the suspect about the robberies, but are expected to soon.

Police posted wanted signs last week around Co-Op City, where the first three attacks happened. The fourth was in Peter Cooper Village.

All of the crimes fit the same pattern. Police say the man would follow a woman who was alone into an elevator, then brandish an ice pick or a knife and rob them when they had nowhere to run.

So far, the thief made off with money, jewelery, shopping bags and a cell phone.

Authorities say the suspect has many prior arrests.
