Curbside appliance thefts on the rise in NYC

A strange new crime wave has hit New York City.

Household appliances left on the curb for pickup by the Sanitation Department are disappearing.

In the past few months, more than 11,000 broken down washing machines, refrigerators and air conditioning units have vanished before sanitation workers could pick them up.

Officials suspect organized crime could be behind the large number of appliance heists. They believe the items are then sold for scrap.
