A man and his dog were attacked by a pit bull at the Tompkins Square Park dog run.

"I'm not a crazy guy," John Juback said.

Juback says however that desperate times are starting to demand desperate measures in Tompkins Square Park.

Just six weeks ago, both Juback and his dog Jesse, were attacked by a pit bull.

"Like lightening, just went for Jesse's neck, luckily Jesse took a step back out of fear," Juback said.

The worst part is that John was bitten too.

"10 rabies shots," Juback said.

John said that he's carrying a kitchen knife with him for protection in case it happens again.

"I'm taking it with me because you'd rather not need it and have it, then need it and not have it," Juback said.

John is certainly not the only one, volunteers at the dog run told Eyewitness News that the problem is getting worse and worse.

"Within the past two months, we had five fights where the dogs had to be rushed to the veterinarian and three people were brought to the hospital," said Garret Rosso, of the Tompkins Square Park dog run.

In all the cases, the dogs were attacked by pit bulls.

Owners are struggling for ways to protect their pooches; still, they wonder how they'd ever make the choice to use a weapon on a dog.
