Firefighters rushed to the scene at 16 Lindsey Street shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday night.
Flames and smoke were coming from the basement apartment when they arrived, officials said.
Firefighters rescued a 58 year old woman found in a staircase. She was taken to Westchester County Medical Center for smoke inhalation. She was listed in critical condition on Monday afternoon.
A 51 year old man was found in the basement apartment bathroom. He rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital in cardiac arrest. He was later pronounced dead.
The names of the two victims have not been released.
Officials said the fire may have started on a couch located in the basement apartment, but the investigation was continuing.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
