Jersey City moves ahead with plan to lay off officers

TRENTON, N.J.

Despite angry protests outside City Hall this month, layoff notices were sent Thursday to 82 cops and seven civilian police department workers.

The layoffs take effect February 15.

Mayor Jerramiah Healy has said the layoffs can be stopped if the union makes contract concessions.

But the union says the city can find other ways to increase revenue and offset costs.
