Police in Newark say chemicals stored in a basement sparked an explosion and house fire overnight Thursday.

Flames ripped through the home on Hazelwood Avenue after neighbors reported hearing a blast. The fire spread to two neighboring homes.

A homeowner was injured after falling down the stairs trying to escape the flames.

The home was so badly damaged, it will have to be demolished.
