Police say a Long Island man faces a criminal impersonation charge for identifying himself as a police officer during a traffic stop.

An officer pulled Christopher Maier of Sayville over during a traffic stop around 12:15 p.m. Friday in Islip Terrace. Authorities said he identified himself as a police officer and displayed a badge, but was found not to be in law enforcement.

The 28-year-old was also charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

A woman answering the phone at Maier's residence declined to comment.
