Rich Viglione of the New York Fire Department says the blaze began at about 6 p.m. Monday inside a large metal-works warehouse in Jamaica, Queens.
Crews brought it under control early Tuesday morning.
About 200 firefighters were at the scene throughout the night.
Viglione says three firefighters sustained burns, one to the face and head. They were taken to a hospital for treatment. Nine other firefighters suffered less serious injuries.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
The incident Commander gave a briefing at the scene late last night. Fire Marshals are investigating.
