Woman who raised NY baby faces kidnap charges

HARTFORD, CT

"I wasn't happy to see her," said Karl Tyson, Carlina's biological father.

"What was it like going face to face with her?" Eyewitness News asked.

"Really sad," Tyson said.

Karl Tyson, Carlina White's biological father reacted moments after walking out of a fifth floor courtroom where he'd strained to see the woman accused of stealing 23 years of memories from him.

"Do you think she's sorry?" Eyewitness News asked.

"No I don't," Tyson said.

A federal complaint says Ann Pettway who had suffered several miscarriages now admits to kidnapping newborn, Carlina, from Harlem Hospital when she was just 19 days old back in 1987.

She then raised her under a different name in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Federal authorities say the accused kidnapper gave a written confession.

The confession says Pettway took the victim from the victim's family, and this was totally unacceptable. Pettway is truly sorry. Pettway was dealing with the stress of trying to be a mom and several miscarriages. She did not believe she would ever be able to be a parent.

Several of Pettway's relatives defended her, saying she was a good parent.

Her lie unraveled when Carlina became increasingly suspicious over the years.

Pettway couldn't produce a birth certificate and later claimed she got Carlina from a woman who used drugs.

Last week, Carlina was reunited with her birth parents.

Over the weekend, Pettway who was on probation for embezzlement in North Carolina, surrendered in Connecticut.
