City University of New York to ban smoking

No butts about it. The City University of New York has voted to ban smoking on all 23 of its campuses.

The New York Times says the campuses, from the College of Staten Island to Lehman College in the Bronx, will have until September 2012 to impose the rules.

Since CUNY cannot forbid smoking on city sidewalks, the smoking ban will be felt more on campuses with large green spaces like Queens College and City College.

The University of Buffalo has already banned smoking on its three campuses. Last Month, Columbia University passed a measure prohibiting smoking within 20 feet of buildings.

CUNY trustees voted for the smoking ban on Monday.
