A soldier from New Jersey has died while serving in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department said Friday that 23-year-old Army Spc. Ryan A. Gartner died Tuesday in Bagram of injuries suffered in a non-combat incident.

Gartner was assigned to the 201st Military Intelligence Battalion, home-based at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Dumont Mayor Matthew McHale told The Record newspaper that Ryan Gartner was "a true patriot." Gartner was serving his second tour of duty.

Former classmates told the newspaper Gartner left Dumont High School before graduating and enrolled in a New Jersey National Guard program at Fort Dix.
