A mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain started falling over most of the state by about 3 a.m. and continued throughout the day, while temperatures stayed below freezing in most areas during the morning hours. That created slick and icy roads that made travel treacherous at times.
Conditions began improving as the day progressed, with warmer temperatures melting away most of the ice and turning the precipitation to all rain during the afternoon hours. But forecasters warned that the precipitation could end as freezing rain or snow before the storm system, leaves the region Saturday night.
