One dead, one critical in Long Island house fire

RONKONKOMA

The fire broke out inside the home on Johnson Avenue in Ronkonkoma just after 3:30 a.m. and quickly spread.

One woman was discovered dead in a room in the back of the house.

She has been identified as Stephani England.

It's amazing anyone got out of the house alive.

Juan Yupton is one of the 8 survivors, but is also a hero who climbed up a ladder, and into the inferno so he could pull out 41-year-old Laura Caldara from a second floor window.

The fire wasn't letting up. Glass was still shattering when Juan made the rescue.

"I took her from the window, and I brought her down and she couldn't talk because there was a lot of smoke in her face," said Yupton.

The building's owner had very little to say when asked about another family paying to live in the basement. He was just shocked by the fire.

"The house is replaceable, it's the people that aren't," he said.
