Michael Carmody, 23, died Wednesday afternoon at a hospital in Paterson shortly after he was removed from life support, the Bergen County prosecutor's office said.
Carmody, of Westwood, had been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of Officer Rachel Morgan, 31, late Sunday night.
Morgan, a two-year veteran who was wearing a bullet-proof vest, was shot three times and remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition Wednesday.
Morgan was shot around 11 p.m. Sunday after pursuing Carmody, who was speeding south on Route 17 in Paramus in a car with fake license plates, police said. As Carmody got on the Garden State Parkway, he lost control of the car and slammed into a snow bank next to the exit ramp, they said.
Morgan apparently was shot when she got to the scene, authorities say. Another officer, Ryan Hayo, soon arrived and exchanged gunfire with Carmody, hitting him six times, they say.
Two shots pierced Morgan's abdomen, and one struck her in a leg, but the protective vest she was wearing deflected two other bullets. She has undergone at least three surgeries and continues to improve, authorities say.
