In a statement, Rice said the Medical Examiner's Office uncovered at least six cases in which laboratory testing performed by county police have produced erroneous results.
The cases involved the drugs ecstasy and ketamine.
Prosecutors and criminal court officials have been notified.
A wider probe has been ordered to determine the scope of the problem.
