Police say 76-year-old Eddie Cortes was on his way to buy groceries when he was hit by the bus in Parkchester Thursday.
Authorities believe the driver did not realize he had struck Cortes and kept going.
After about a block, an eyewitness caught up with the bus and alerted the driver about what happened.
Cortes leaves behind a wife and 10 children.
