Boy who was fatally struck by car honored at vigil

BRONX

A small vigil with candles and flowers marks the spot in Tremont where Russel Smith was hit Wednesday morning.

He went out to buy milk for his baby brother when he was hit by a car and killed.

His mother visited the memorial Thursday morning and fought back tears as she remembered her son.

"He loved singing, dancing," Monica Mitchell said. "He was good in school, a people person. It's just a shame. A shame. I'm so heartbroken."

The driver who hit Smith had the green light and remained at the scene, where he spoke to police. He has not been charged.
