Massive mulch fire extinguished in Central NJ

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, N.J.

South Brunswick Police Sgt. Jim Ryan says the fire, which was reported around 5:30 a.m., quickly spread while shooting flames as high as 30 feet into the air. But no injuries were reported.

The cause of the blaze - which apparently started near a local business on Broadway Road - remains under investigation. But officials say it's not considered suspicious.

Nearly 60 firefighters from several departments in Middlesex County and two nearby counties battled the blaze, which burned for several hours before being extinguished early Saturday afternoon.

Their efforts were hampered in part by strong winds that were gusting as high as 60 mph.
