Wake continues Wed. for slain Poughkeepsie officer

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.

Mourners filled the Cargain Funeral Home in Carmel Tuesday night to pay their respects to Officer John Falcone.

"He was very compassionate about his job," police department employee Dorinda Germano said. "He was very compassionate about everybody."

Falcone was posthumously promoted Tuesday, with more details announced Wednesday.

The 44-year-old Falcone was shot and killed last Friday by a man who police say murdered his wife at the Poughkeepsie train station.

The gunman - 27-year-old Lee Welch of Catskill - was bleeding from a self-inflicted wound to his chest and carrying his 3-year-old daughter from the scene when he was confronted by Falcone and another officer.

Police say he shot Falcone in the head during a struggle with officers and then killed himself with a gunshot to the head. The child was not hurt.

Falcone died later in the day at a local hospital.

Another wake for Falcone will be held Wednesday.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan will say the funeral mass Thursday morning at St. James the Apostle Church, also in Carmel.

The calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Falcone's funeral will start with a 10 a.m. on Thursday.
