LIPA crew rescues raccoon with jar stuck on head

RONKONKOMA, NY

Folks in Ronkonkoma woke up to find the raccoon balanced on top of a telephone pole with its head stuck in a peanut butter jar.

Neighbors tried to figure out ways to help the stranded animal down.

They say authorities didn't want to get involved.

"We've made many phone calls. We called the animal control. They can't do anything," resident Suzanne Macaluso said. "The fire department was here, Lakeland Fire Department. And the police department was here and basically we were told there's nothing [they] could do to help."

By the end of the day, the Long Island Power Authority was called in to assist, and a crew was able to get the raccoon down from the utility pole.

The peanut butter jar was removed and the raccoon headed into the woods.

Witnesses say the raccoon appeared to be in good condition.
