Waiting lists for kindergarten classes in the city are a lot longer this year.

The Department of Education says more than 3,100 kids are now waiting to get acceptance letters for the fall.

That's 42 percent more than at this time last year.

But officials say the lists will shrink as some parents opt to send their kids to private or charter schools and new classes are added.
