"Leave the gun. Take the canoli."

There's a great line in The Godfather (and, yes, there are hundreds of great lines) where Clemenza, one of Don Corleone's lieutenants, is telling Michael, the Don's son, that the expected bloodshed after Michael's plot to kill a crooked cop will be "pretty G**damn bad."

Explains Clemenza, "Probably all the other Families will line up against us. These things gotta happen every five years or so, 10 years. Helps to get rid of the bad blood. You know, you gotta stop them at the beginning. Like they should have stopped Hitler at Munich; they should never have let him get away with that."

That may be how they're all thinking in Washington these days. The President says he's rejecting the plan by Republicans in the House to cut spending and taxes; the House majority says its ready do to battle and shut down the government.

I'm not sure who plays the role of Clemenza, but we're in a disappearing sand in the hourglass situation, where non-essential government services could stop as early as Saturday.

We'll have the latest, tonight at 11.

We 'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast, and Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can join Liz Cho and me, tonight at 11, right after 20/20.
