Civic group finds LIRR one of most inefficient

The non-profit civic group Citizens Budget Commission reports that the Long Island Rail Road is one of the most inefficient commuter railroads in the nation.

The commission ranked the LIRR ninth worst out of 10 in cost per railcar.

It was seventh in cost per passenger trip.

In fact, the railroad pays 57 cents for each mile a passenger travels. That's way above the 37 cent national average.
