New York state education commissioner resigns

New York state Education Commissioner David Steiner tells The Associated Press that his resignation and that of the New York City schools chancellor aren't related.

Steiner made his surprise resignation announcement hours after city Chancellor Cathie Black announced her resignation after just four tumultuous months on the job.

Steiner says the timing is simply what he called a bizarre coincidence.

He says he's been planning to leave the commissioner's job for some time. He says he found it exhilarating and exhausting.

He's been on the job just over two years.
