Children injured when robbery suspects crash jeep

NEWARK One of the children is only a year old and listed in critical condition.

The accident happened at the intersection of 18th Avenue and 18th Street just before 7:30 Thursday this evening in /*Newark*/'s west ward.

It happened almost two hours earlier when a robbery and shooting occurred at Humbodt Street.

The suspects apparently made their getaway in a red Jeep.

At 7:19pm, an officer in a marked police vehicle at the corner of Avon Avenue and 16th Street spotted what appeared to be the suspect's jeep.

The officer turned on the lights and sirens and attempted to stop it.

Investigators said the vehicle did stop briefly a couple of blocks away, but then suddenly sped off.

More officers gave chase for several blocks before opting to vacate the pursuit.

Moments later, at the intersection of 18th and 18th, the jeep struck another vehicle that had been waiting at the light at that intersection.

The jeep careened out of control striking a fence, flipping several times and hitting the two children and their aunt, before finally coming to rest on the northwest side of 18th Street in front of a corner store.

All the injured were transported to /*UMDNJ*/. The youngest, a one-year-old girl, remained in critical condition. Her 40-year-old aunt and 10-year-old cousin suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Two people in the jeep, both 16-years-old, also suffered injuries, but their conditions were not immediately known.

They ask that anyone with information about this or any other crimes contact them via the Department's 24-hour /*Crime Stoppers*/ anonymous tip line at 877 NWK-TIPS (877 695-8477) or NWK-GUNS (877 695-4867).
