A woman arguing with her husband was hit and killed by a Nassau County police car while crossing the street.

The tragic accident happened in Bellmore at 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Police say by all accounts the weather was terrible, but the woman chose to walk for more than a mile in the torrential downpour, and was struck and killed in the middle of Merrick Road. The officer was on routine patrol.

The woman was returning to her home, and was identified by police as 63-year-old Sherry Lang.

Mrs. Lang who police say ignored a traffic light was struck while crossing a four-lane road in the middle of the block.

Lang worked as a secretary at the local elementary school where she was well-known and well-regarded.
