Dog found after thieves drove off with him

LONG ISLAND

It happened Monday night on /*Long Island*/ just off the /*Long Island Expressway*/ near exit 60. The driver left his SUV running at a Gulf station.

That's when someone stole their vehicle with the family's yellow labrador retriever, Lucas inside.

Billy and Cynthia Homich have spent the day in a panic.

"I didn't even see the car driving away. That's how quick it happened," said Homich.

Billy and Lucas were heading back from obedience training, the dog in a crate on the back seat, when Billy stopped at his neighborhood gas station for a pack of cigarettes.

In the surveillance video, you can see him pull right up to the front door for a quick trip inside with the engine still running.

And in that split second, a shadowy figure approached the truck from the rear, jumped in and drove away with Lucas still in his crate.

Lucas was spotted by a woman inside the stolen SUV parked at an apartment complex in Islip.

The doors were unlocked, so she got the insurance information out of the car and called the family.

Now the family has their SUV and dog back.
