54-year-old Gwendolyn Brown's family hadn't heard from her in a few days and became worried.
Police entered Brown's apartment on Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
They found her laying face up on her bed with a gunshot wound to her head.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say that they did not recover a gun at the scene and they also say robbery does not appear to be the motive.
So far, there are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
