Seedy motel torn down in West Hempstead

WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.

Thursday, the wrecking ball finished-off the Courtesy Motel across from a /*Long Island Rail Road*/ station.

For years, the town had fought unsuccessfully to get the motel knocked down.

Then, a new housing zone was created, and now 150 apartments will be built on the lot.

The town supervisor says the motel was known for its criminal activity and that's why the community never stopped fighting.

"Every day that we were working to get this closed, we were working in partnership with the residents, they were long suffering, and that's why I'm really, really particularly thrilled for the residents of this community," Hempstead Town Supervisor /*Kate Murray*/ said.

The town hopes to draw young professionals to the new complex because the site is near the West Hempstead Rail Station.
